Click hereWhat to Check When Buying a Used Engine ECU? A 7-Point Checklist
When chosen correctly, a used engine ECU is a far more economical solution than a new one. But the wrong ECU means both lost time and extra cost. Check these seven points before buying.
1. The part number must match exactly
The hardware number and the vehicle manufacturer number should be compared together. We explain which number to look at in our part number reading guide in detail.
2. Consider the software version
The same hardware can come with different software. Differences such as automatic vs. manual transmission or Euro 4 vs. Euro 5 may be built into the software.
3. Engine code and horsepower
Different engine options within the same model use different ECUs. Check the engine size and engine code.
4. Physical condition
There should be no impact damage on the housing, no corrosion or bent connector pins, and no signs of water or of the unit having been opened.
5. Coding and immobilizer
On most vehicles, the engine ECU works paired with the immobilizer. After replacement, coding, cloning or pairing may be needed. Talk in advance with a qualified workshop that can do this.
6. Warranty and return terms
The seller's warranty period and return terms should be stated in writing. At ECUALL, all products come with a 6-month warranty, and your statutory 14-day right of withdrawal is reserved. Details: Returns, Exchanges and Warranty Terms.
7. Make sure the fault really is in the ECU
A check engine light does not always mean an ECU fault. Sensor, wiring harness or power supply problems can cause similar symptoms. For symptoms, see our engine ECU fault symptoms article.
